About Sedona, Arizona

Red Rock Country! There are no words to describe Sedona accurately. Simply stated, Sedona is a world-class destination. Minute by minute the landscape changes in the shifting sunlight and clouds. Towering cathedrals of red rock encircle a majestic valley of gnarled Juniper pine and red clay. The locals find Sedona as enchanting as any who visit.

Describing Sedona at length would be an easy task. What's not to love? Sedona rests in some of the most beautiful country in the world. The city itself rests on the banks of Oak Creek, a creek which runs all year-round. The famous "Oak Creek Canyon drive" is a famed stretch of road starting at the north end of Sedona and finishing in Flagstaff. What many people do not know is that Highway 89A (Oak Creek Canyon drive) continues to the west through amazing Jerome, Prescott Valley, and historic Prescott, AZ. Travelers from Phoenix who have never seen this part of the country should start their day journey from Phoenix through Payson, then up to Flagstaff and down Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona. For a map of this Arizona scenic drive through red-rock country, view here. Take notice of the alternate routes.

Sedona is actually 3 different towns. There is the "new" section of Sedona on 89A as one enters from the west. Here, residents will find the major shopping centers like Bashas, Safeway, and local restaurant favorites like Dahl & Di Luca, The Barking Frog, and Picazzo's. Travelers will then head "down the hill" toward Uptown. Uptown Sedona is the tourism district full of shops and more restaurants like Tao's. Uptown is also the gateway to Oak Creek Canyon. If you head east and south through the roundabouts, you'll cross T'laquepaque and southern Sedona. South Sedona is mostly residential yet offers some amazing hiking experiences. The most popular rock formations and trails are in south Sedona like Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Chapel Rock, and the Little Horse Trail. Of course, this is debatable. Some folks love the trail heads of northwest Sedona like Doe Mountain, Enchanted Canyon, and Teapot. Let's not forget those with 4-wheel capability! Schnebly Hill Road just off the round-about near T'laquepaque will take adventurers all the way to I-17 up precarious cliffs and rough roads. This is where the jeep tours take tourists, and it should never be attempted by anyone without a high-clearance vehicle. However, the first portion is paved and offers some amazing views of Sedona along with stellar hiking trails.

From the days of John Wayne until Lucille O'Ball, Sedona has been a destination not only of movie-makers, but of the stars themselves. Cathedral Rock is one such place where old western films were made. The iconic formation rests on the south side of Oak Creek and rises almost 5,000ft. It's a popular destination for photographers and tourist who attempt to catch a famous photo-op in the reflective pools. There are three trails that lead to the peak. The popular Cathedral Rock trail which takes climbers up steep cliffs to award them with spectacular views in the saddle of the twin peaks, and the Red Rock State Park trail. The unknown Turkey Creek Trail is perhaps a favorite of locals because of its hidden location and free parking.

Sedona boasts some amazing resorts and restaurants as well as T'laquepaque; a replica of the ancient Spanish city in Mexico where art shops and restaurants are at their finest. You may hear ambient music in the distance being softly played as you walk the cobblestone streets. Likely, it's Robin Miller on the keyboard and guitar; entertaining guests as they mill about Sedona's most popular district. If you're interested in hosting your wedding or family reunion at T'laquepaque, call Adam Lovejoy at the main office for more information.

Sedona's uptown district is by far the busiest tourist destination. There you'll find the Pink Jeep Tour company along with fine-dining restaurants and shops. The area largely caters to tourists on the lookout for trinkets. For a slightly "elevated" experience, head up to the Hyatt Pinon Point behind Cold Stone Creamery. The shops at the Hyatt offer more sophisticated options for art and decor.

If you're looking to purchase real estate in Sedona, but don't like the traffic and crowds, look to east Sedona toward the Village of Oak Creek. This region offers the same views without the need to engage in the uptown fanfare. Although in Sedona, there is no such thing as a "bad location".
